A weekend of swimming, biking and running
This weekend was to be my first 'proper' official Olympic distance triathlon, I had a few days in London earlier in the week and was left a little tired from this. With reports in the news of shark sightings off Cornwall I faced this with much trepidation! Friday evening arrived, along with Mike, so we headed down to the Avon for an evening swim. Grey cloudy skies and rain clouds greeted us, along with a stupidly high tide after all the recent rain. It was refreshing, we swam down to the main river to be greeted by a leaping salmon, then a shoal of fish acting like dolphins swimming around us. We set our sights on the road sign about 300m or so down the road and set off against the current. It was certainly quite a slimy swim, lots of seaweed and river debris. The rain came in thick and heavy, and we were all a bit smug with ourselves for being in the river having some fun. I really enjoyed this short swim, with my new wetsuit socks it was great. We truly deserved the hot shower and hot chocolate afterwards!
On Saturday I completed my Olympic distance triathlon, I think I had thought about it too much as I decided the swell was too large and various other excuses. Instead, I set off on the bike, then completed the 10k run afterwards. I managed the bike in 2.08 and the run in 59mins, so I was really pleased about that, just annoyed at my chickening out of the swim!
Yesterday evening we thought we'd treat Lynora to an evening dip in the river Avon too, so we headed down to Bantham, to the little boat house behind the sand dunes just in the river mouth. The tide was coming in fast and we just had time to have a 30minute swim, including getting swept down river to test the strength of the current, it was good fun!
I then ran home from Bantham, which took approx 45mins, a very mixed terrain, with fields of cows, a tidal crossing and some patches of overgrown woodland to contend with. I made it home by dark and had no cobwebs left!! Weekend done, rest day today ;-)

Last time the Olympic distance took 4.15mins- so had I completed the swim this time it should have been approx 3.52 (figured that my swim wouldn't get much slower as I have much improved my technique, just not my doubting mind!)
